Sons of Anarchy Commission - Juice

Title: Sons of Anarchy Commission - Juice
Medium: Chalk, Charcoal
Scale: Original is 8" x 10"

Notes: Another Sons of Anarchy commission. If you missed the previous one, it's here.
The character of juice was kind of enigmatic in the series, if you're a fan. I would say that he was one of the under-appreciated characters of the whole series, but that's a different type of conversation.
Suffice it to say that I did another piece of Juice Ortiz. He is now sitting with the other four that I did for Memphis Comic Expo a few months ago.
More to come soon...

Now that BFA is finally over I can finally get back to my attempts at updating more often.

For those that won't make it to the show, I am going to go ahead and post my BFA show pieces here as well so that people can take a look.

All of these are from a potential graphic novel project. Hopefully you enjoy them.

Honor Decoded

Title: Honor Decoded
Medium: Photoshop CS6
Scale: Square - Originally 5" x 5", Rectangular - 17" x 5.5"

Notes: The digital realm has possessed the world we live in. Each and every day we are taken, mostly unaware, on a trip through this virtual world. After all, the world of human thought is not based on anything tangible, it's based entirely on digital code that our brain naturally executes. At the very core of our cellular level, we are all small transmissions of data, translated and interconnected by molecular machines that are ever-present in our bodies. These biological processes result in chemical reactions that we interpret as emotion.

My comfort level with the digital world has been extremely high for the majority of my life. It has been reinforced over time by my daily use of multiple media facets. The struggle is to link physical media, such as pencils and pens, with the digital painting techniques that I’ve developed. Through this struggle my process has evolved: I use physical media as my starting point. My digital paintings use brushes created by my hand that use tangible media such as pastel and oil paint. Each stroke and smudge is represented in the final pieces to show that digital painting can stand on the same legs as traditional painting.

I bridge the gap between physical and digital processes. I use a stylus in the same way that others might use a paintbrush. Ultimately, this process is meant to streamline the process of painting. There is no dry time, there is no limit to how many strokes can be made, and there is no muddying of the color. This leaves me the ability to experiment without the worry of making a mess.

Illustration 5: Absolved Character Archetype #5 - Masques

Title: Illustration 5: Absolved Character Archetype #5 - Masques
Date: October 20 - November 4, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6
Scale: Sketches vary, Final is 11" x 17"

Notes: I think that during this piece, I went through so many variations of the same thing... That damn hand holding the knife has been redrawn like thirty times. I tried good reference, I tried just winging it, I tried copying directly... I think that ultimately, I just, as always, need to draw more hands.
Regardless, this was still an incredibly fun and challenging piece. I tried to make her a bit sexy, but still have that badassery attached to her. I can honestly say that with each piece that I do, I'm trying to tackle something major so that I can learn from them and make sure not to make the same mistakes again. It's fun, but incredibly frustrating at the same time.
Anyway, more to come!
And also... a little bonus walk-through below:

Illustration 5: Absolved Character Archetype #4 - Hellions

Title: Illustration 5: Absolved Character Archetype #4 - Hellions
Date: October 1 - 16, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6
Scale: Sketches vary, Final is 11" x 17"

Notes: You know how that moment hits you? That moment where you realize that what you've painted is not exactly what was in your head? I think it's safe to say that's what happened here. There was something that fell apart at the conceptual phase that should have been more realized early on. All I can say is that I need to draw like a billion more children to get a proper handle on drawing them without reference.
That and I was experimenting with new lights and differing color palettes.
Either way... this was one that needs a redesign from the ground up.

Illustration 5: Absolved Character Archetype #4 - Foundling (WIP)

Title: Illustration 5: Absolved Character Archetype #4 - Foundling (WIP)
Medium: Photoshop CS6
Scale: Varies.

Notes: Just working on the next character archetype. I can honestly say that I have the character down it feels like, but the background needs a ton of work. I think I want to go the creepy Sam Wolfe Connelly route on this one. Have some dark stuff in the background, because let's face it... these kids are psychotic!

Illustration 5: Absolved Character Archetype #3 - Germs

Title: Illustration 5: Absolved Character Archetype #3 - Germs
Date: September 17 - 30, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6
Scale: Sketches vary, Final is 11" x 17"

Notes: This one kind of surprised me a little. It was definitely a super fun piece to work on, and I have a ton more that I want to do!
Overall, the marionettes have always been the most intriguing to me. I want to paint them a ton more!
This is the final for character number three. More to come.

Illustration 5: Absolved Character Archetype #2 - Vigilants

Title: Illustration 5: Absolved Character Archetype #2 - Vigilants
Medium: Photoshop CS6, Pencil
Scale: Each 'piece' varies, final is 11" x 17"

Notes: The second archetype in a long string of archetypes that I am working on.
This piece was definitely out of my comfort zone because of the composition, color palette, and mood. But I think it was definitely a push forward in where I want to be.
There was a ton of research done for this archetype, so I feel like it was quite a bit more fleshed out than other ones that I've done thus far. All I can say really is that I want to keep pushing harder and learn from what I did here. As always, more to come!

Sketchy Elf (Cont.)

Title: Sketchy Elf (Cont.)
Date: August 23 & 26, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CC & CS6
Scale: Original is 3066px x 4582px

Notes: Decided to keep running with this one. I'm trying to learn to use more texture in my pieces as well as use reference effectively. I still need to get used to shooting my own reference more often so that it can be sold later hahaha! Anyway, just thought I would post the small bit of update on this character sketch. GOTTA RUN TO CLASS!

Birthday Present for Mimi

Title: Birthday Present for Mimi
Medium: Gouache on Illustration Board
Scale: Original is approx. 8" x 10"

Notes: Ashley came up to me not too long ago and was like... "You should do this painting for Mimi." She proceeded to describe what she thought would look good and I was like... TIME FOR REFERENCE. And so here is the result.
The puppy pictured is our little papillon, "Gypsy". This was for a birthday present. :)

Supernatural: Mini-Paintings

Title: Supernatural: Mini-Paintings
Medium: Gouache on Illustration Board
Scale: Each painting is approx. 3.5" x 4"

Notes: Just using reference and exaggerating it for fun. Really just practicing traditional painting. Taking reference and just pushing it hard.

Fantasy Character Portrait A

Title: Fantasy Character Portrait A
Date: August 14, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6

Notes: I was staring at the old Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale character portraits that were done some time ago, and was like... I want to try that! So this is just my first attempt at a fantasy character portrait done in that style. Trying to see if I can manipulate reference for my own purpose while still keeping my painterly style. I think this was a pretty successful attempt...
The comic version in my opinion just looks so graphic and awesome. It was just a play with the filters and managed to make it look sweet! More on this soon...
