Impressionist Ashley

Title: Impressionist Ashley
Date: January 3&4, 2015
Medium: Photoshop CS6
Scale: Original is 16.5" x 22"

Notes: Going back in time here to try and see how well I can redo an old piece that I did quite a while ago...

Original is here.

I tried to use an impressionist painting technique while doing this piece. Couple that with the techniques learned from previously and this is the result.

Famous Writers: Neil Gaiman

Title: Famous Writers: Neil Gaiman
Date: November 16, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6
Scale: Original is 2560px x 2560px

Notes: Just taking a break from homework.
I decided it would be fun to paint a famous writer. In this case, Mr. Gaiman.
A while back I was drawing them, so now it's time to try painting them.

Digital Painting: Demo for Class

Title: Digital Painting: Demo for Class
Date: October 24 & 29, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6
Scale: Each of the Originals are 2200px x 2200px

Notes: Alright, so perhaps this one needs a tad bit of explaining...

So, once upon a time, I thought it would be very beneficial to learn digital painting. I thought I would never catch up to my peers as there are soooo many people that are really, really badass at digital painting. I was literally struggling to even learn the basics of digital painting. I had my little bamboo and I would just sit and try to paint something... anything.

For quite a while it was something that I went out of my way to avoid. I felt somehow that the tablet would be something that could be learned later, or somehow I would magically just "get it" one day. I would try all sorts of different things. Scanning a drawing and then painting over that - didn't seem to work. Painting with big strokes - that didn't seem to get me where I wanted. Scribbling to get an image to magically appear out thin air - that definitely didn't work.

I would just give up time and time again to just draw again. With a good 'ole pencil. The crazy thing is that you can track my progress on this blog.

Anyway, point being that through perseverance you can really get there. I am finally feeling like I'm getting somewhere. I know that with all creative endeavors, it's a fleeting thing, but this should at least stand as a testament that I'm getting somewhere.

So all this is to say that, somehow I got to a point where I could teach people a little something!
I got asked by my teacher at the beginning of the semester if I would like to guest teach the entire class. Boy was it intimidating, but ultimately, I know that teaching can not only make a person better, but I was willing to - nay needed to - share the knowledge that was passed down to me.

Somehow, the entire class - everyone! - seemed to have made improvements in the small time that I taught. It was invigorating. So I thought that I would follow suit with everyone and join in on the portrait study that I had them work on. I love answering questions and I'm constantly joking that if I don't know it, I'll find someone who does.

Tenacity is an insane thing. And I hope to keep continuing on this crazy tradition. Not only has my fiancee really pushed me constantly to get to a better level, but I've surrounded myself with all manner of creativity. The space that we occupy is littered on almost every surface with art of some sort. She is my catalyst. Couple that with the fact that since the beginning, when I first asked Grace Liu some time back what it means to really work in the art industry, I've been constantly inspired to keep pushing forward.

All I can say is that no matter what, just keep pushing - it might take time, but you can get where you need to in time. Just keep at it!

Also... I've done both of these studies before, and I thought it would be interesting again to show the progress.

Dean Cornwell Master Study

Side-by-Side comparison.
Dean Cornwell on left, Mine on right.

Title: Dean Cornwell Master Study
Date: October 9 - 16, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6
Scale: Original is 6134px x 7400px

Notes: My color master study. It's kind of awesome and odd to look back at this one from awhile ago... You can see the first time I attempted this study in 2013, below.
I still think that one isn't too bad of an attempt, but it was supremely grayed out... I think my color vision has increased ten-fold from then, and I also think that my accuracy is quite a bit better. But all-in-all, wasn't too bad of an attempt, even then...

Check this out: July 16, 2013 (see below)

Sargent Master Study

Side-by-Side comparison.
Sargent top. Mine bottom.

Title: Sargent Master Study
Date: October 9 - 16, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6
Scale: Original is 3750px x 3096px

Notes: Gray scale master study. This one is a drastic improvement. Granted the study below isn't finished, but even from the get-go this one is completely superior in every aspect.
Sargent is amazing!
Improvement is awesome to see and I can't wait to check back next year!

Check this out: December 31, 2013 (see below)

White Zombie - "Electric Head Part 1 & 2"

Digital Painting: Self-Portraits

Title: Digital Painting: Self-Portraits
Date: September 26 & 30 & October 3, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CC / CS6
Scale: Original is 3000px x 3000px

Notes: For digital painting class we were to paint four different variants of self-portraits, each using different approaches. Of course the realistic approach suits me best, but it was fun to try different ways of painting.
Illustration 5: Absolved Character Archetype #4 - Foundling (WIP)

Title: Illustration 5: Absolved Character Archetype #4 - Foundling (WIP)
Medium: Photoshop CS6
Scale: Varies.

Notes: Just working on the next character archetype. I can honestly say that I have the character down it feels like, but the background needs a ton of work. I think I want to go the creepy Sam Wolfe Connelly route on this one. Have some dark stuff in the background, because let's face it... these kids are psychotic!

Twenty One Pilots - "Migraine"

Digital Painting: Shaving is a Bitch

Title: Digital Painting: Shaving is a Bitch
Date: September 26 & 30, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CC / CS6
Scale: Original is 3000px x 3000px

Notes: Continuing on the digital painting portrait tradition, here's the first of many to come. Using portraits that we took, we were to basically copy what we see and try to replicate it to the best of our ability. Each portrait will have a different feel to it. Again, this is the first of many.
As a side note, we were to save every fifteen minutes. The result is below.

Illustration 5: Absolved Character Archetype #2 - Vigilants

Title: Illustration 5: Absolved Character Archetype #2 - Vigilants
Medium: Photoshop CS6, Pencil
Scale: Each 'piece' varies, final is 11" x 17"

Notes: The second archetype in a long string of archetypes that I am working on.
This piece was definitely out of my comfort zone because of the composition, color palette, and mood. But I think it was definitely a push forward in where I want to be.
There was a ton of research done for this archetype, so I feel like it was quite a bit more fleshed out than other ones that I've done thus far. All I can say really is that I want to keep pushing harder and learn from what I did here. As always, more to come!

Digital Painting: Painterly Objects

Title: Digital Painting: Painterly Objects
Date: August 22, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CC
Scale: Original is ~8.5" x 11"

Notes: For the first assignment in Digital Painting class we were to paint a transition from one color to another and also paint a sphere and a cube from imagination. Looking back at the cube I notice that it is kind of off kilter, but it was literally painted in like five minutes. I just wanted to knock it out pretty fast so that I could start painting more things. I actually think that I'm going to paint a few more stacks of cubes and maybe practice more concept-art simpler objects like crates and lights to start getting some object painting out of the way. As always, trying to make a push into the concept art world.
Two Warm-Up WIPs

Title: Two Warm-Up WIPs
Date: August 23, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CC
Scale: Each piece varies.

Notes: I was just getting in some quick studies practice. There are lots and lots more of these in the pipe, plus I actually kind of want to push them further, but we'll see what happens. Regardless, more to come!

It's going to be a crazy continuation of the Absolved project from last year.

Notes: Just trying to keep brushing up on my pencil works. Just some quick studies.

June - Anatomy Summary

Title: June - Anatomy Summary
Date: June
Medium: Photoshop CS6
Scale: Varies

Notes: Overall, the month of June was, what I felt like, a bit of an unproductive month. I think maybe I was feeling down or perhaps all the pending housework was destroying my productivity, but I can say that I'm trying to make a point of the things that I need to work on. Edges and Stoke economy. These are the main things that I want to really make sure that I start to watch. I think I'm getting kind of there as far as getting really expressive with my painting technique, but I think it's still falling apart on those two aspects mentioned. It's a long and frustrating process, but hopefully in the end it will be worth it.
As always... time to just keep on powering more down!

Game of Thrones - Season 1, Episode 1
(Stark's Dilemma)
(Work in Progress)

Title: Game of Thrones - Season 1, Episode 1 (Stark's Dilemma) (Work in Progress)
Date: June 17 - 24, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6
Scale: Original is 12.8" x 7.8"

Notes: I really want to do a study for every episode, so I've been taking screen caps of what I would consider to be a 'pinnacle' moment of each episode. I'm really behind as far as the work goes, but I love this show so damn much that I just want to keep pushing on my studies for these. They are some great examples of dynamic lighting, crazy scenes, and even awesome character design. Either way... more to come on these.

Demon Lord - Applied Study (WIP)

Title: Demon Lord - Applied Study (WIP)
Date: June 24 - 29, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6

Notes: Still plugging away at this WIP. That staff is looking stupid and so is the altar... much work to go!

Ram Horns - A Study

Title: Ram Horns - A Study
Date: June 24, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6

Notes: I worked a little backward this time, but this was a study for the bigger illustration below. Let's face it... horns of any variety are kind of a pain because of all the folds and ridges that are there. BUT they look awesome!
I was trucking along with my demon lord painting and lo and behold, I realized in mid-paint that... I have no idea really how ram horns work - SO! I thought, what better time than to study some horns from a photo. I took the study of the horns and began to apply it to the demon lord painting that I'm working on. I'm still in like mid-paint for the demon lord, but this is it so far:

Demon Lord - Applied Study (WIP)

Title: Demon Lord - Applied Study (WIP)
Date: June 24 & 25, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6

Notes: This piece is really just a test to see how well I can use both applied studies, imagination and to really push that dramatic lighting. It still has quite a bit to go, but I thought I would share where I'm at currently. Finally breaking away from those damn studies to actually paint something that I enjoy.

Portrait Painting Experiment

Title: Portrait Painting Experiment
Date: June 16, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6
Scale: Original is around 1400px x 2100px

Notes: I was trying to experiment with making digital look even more like traditional. There are so many textures that appear when you paint on a canvas that is really hard to mimic digitally. Either way, it was a fun experiment.
OH! And I was also trying to mimic John Larriva and the way he paints... but of course he's more fluid with his strokes of the paint brush.

The Rogue (WIP)

Title: The Rogue (WIP)
Date: June 15, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6

Notes: Earlier I started to paint a character archetype - The Druid. This is the second archetype, A rogue - specifically a fencer. It's planned that the arm-piece for her offensive arm (the rapier) would billow out so that it would be somewhat confusing as to which direction the sword would be coming from. It's still just a work in progress, but this is the start.

Leather-Clad

Title: Leather-Clad
Date: June 7 - 10, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6
Scale: Original is around 24" x 33"

Notes: This originally just started as a painting of simply... how big can I go? I wanted to try out an extremely large painting with as much detail, plus I had it in my head to do a study with purely leather. I got a bit carried away with the rendering, but this was sooo fun to paint!

6-2-2014

Title: 6-2-2014
Date: June 2, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6
Scale: Original is 1366px x 2048px

Notes: Yesterday was the day of studies again. Starting with this guy... a head portrait. Sorry that I don't have a link to the reference, but it was from a guy that I found on tumblr. Tried lots of new things to really see how far I could push this guy, and I have to say, having a new monitor really helps a bunch for color accuracy.
6-1-2014

Title: 6-1-2014
Date: June 1, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6
Scale: Varies.

Notes: Starting to gather more anatomy studies for the month. I'm trying to do something similar to what I was doing last month. I'll keep collecting them together

Anatomy Studies for May

Title: Anatomy Studies for May
Date: May 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS3
Scale: Each 'image' varies in size.

Notes: This is pretty much the sum-up from the month of May for my anatomy studies. I plan on doing more of these during June, so this is of course just the first month of true studies. All-in-all just a combination of all of them smashed together.
Class Variance: Druid

Title: Class Variance: Druid
Date: May 28, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6

Notes: I'm trying to start working on a 'what-if' hypothetical project. It will consist of a bunch of different character designs based on the generic character archetypes that are in MMOs. This is of course the first of many... and it is also a bit of a WIP still.

 WIPs

Title: WIPs
Date: Varies
Medium: Photoshop CS3, CS6
Scale: Each 'image' varies in scale.

Notes: I just want to get all caught up for the time that I've been away... just some half-starts and studies.
