Notes: Every InkTober thus far, I have been very productive. Somehow this one got away from me. It's okay though, this semester has been one of extreme growth and I can't complain. I still had lots of fun sketching really fast for this InkTober and I hope to jump in next year.

Notes: Ashley has a huge fascination with all things water-borne, so I thought it would be awesome to paint a piece specifically for her. The photo didn't turn out the greatest so it looks better in person, but it was a ton of fun to just stop questioning and just paint.

Notes: Ashley came up to me not too long ago and was like... "You should do this painting for Mimi." She proceeded to describe what she thought would look good and I was like... TIME FOR REFERENCE. And so here is the result. 
The puppy pictured is our little papillon, "Gypsy". This was for a birthday present. :)

Fantasy Character Portrait A

Notes: I was staring at the old Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale character portraits that were done some time ago, and was like... I want to try that! So this is just my first attempt at a fantasy character portrait done in that style. Trying to see if I can manipulate reference for my own purpose while still keeping my painterly style. I think this was a pretty successful attempt...
The comic version in my opinion just looks so graphic and awesome. It was just a play with the filters and managed to make it look sweet! More on this soon...

Notes: No joke... this is the biggest painting I've ever done.
For some reason I had this in my head early on. Before I even started painting it I kind of knew exactly what I wanted to paint. Not only that, but this was one of the first real attempts at doing anything in oil that was more than just black and white. Oh this was so exciting to me and I definitely DEFINITELY want to do more of this.

Notes: This was a birthday present for my special lady friend. She loves these little guys! I wish I could be as happy as they are all the time! They are from Miyazaki films such as Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro.

Notes: This was my first attempt at oil paints ever. I think it turned out okay, but those eyes are still wonky. From what I hear you can just go right over oil paints with more oil paints. OOHHH I'm so excited about Oil painting!

Independent Study -- Foundlings

Notes: The first sketches of the Foundlings, the second archetype for the game.
They look like children, but are actually extremely powerful and magically active. They have a form of mutation that causes them to age (internally) very rapidly, and they unfortunately only have a lifespan of about twelve years or so... Each point of mutation causes the skeleton and musculature to coil around rock formations that protrude from the skin.
Also the area that they live in is inhabited by 'Nurses' or Mamas.
For the first week I'm just doing a ton of studies based around children and costumes and also vintage style nurses and cyberpunk nurses.

Illustration 3 -- Uprising (100 Circles and Silhouettes)

100 Circles

Scale: Each 'page' is 9" x 12"

Notes: We were to paint 100 circles of differing colors (trying not to repeat colors if at all possible) and use those as our driving tool for creating objects and illustrations inside of each. We could combine circles to create a larger piece or break the frame of the circle, the main point was to use the circle as a focal point.

This was actually a really interesting exercise and I found out that doing them while watching TV really helps a ton. You start to force yourself to see things that you wouldn't normally see. I tried to slightly coordinate the circle's color with the object placed inside so that it would further reinforce the image placed into it. I'm not sure it worked out 100%, but I tried.

40 Silhouettes

Notes: The next assignment we have is to simplify 40 objects into basic silhouettes.
I instantly broke these down into groups for some reason (maybe I unconsciously read ahead on the syllabus?).  Either way, I tried to find some interesting silhouettes that were nearby, or that I already had a reference image of. That way I wouldn't have to travel far.
The next step is take each of the silhouettes that we found and trace them into a basic outline and make something completely different inside of them. The point is to sort of do a juxtaposition of outer shape as a whole with a different illustration on the inside. As of right now I'm really enjoying the Destruction through Nature set (group 10).

"Through Fire and Flames" - DragonForce

Sorry I haven't been around for a bit, but I just wanted to throw a quick update for everyone. I have been drawing like a madman lately (stuff that I can't show yet as it's a project that my fiancee and I have been working on together), but I thought it would be nice to just show you guys that I'm not dead yet!

Either way, more updates are definitely on the way. I would like to get back to what I was doing last summer and try and update like every other day or something.

Also, the other reason that I haven't been updating is that I'm getting back into wood carving, and not only does that stuff take a while to do, but it also doesn't tend to look like much until the end result. Gotta get those guns, and what better way to do that then to carve like a beast. BEASTMODE!

Assorted Anatomy

Notes:  The majority of these are supposed to be full-page spreads of anatomy study. The hands and feet were meant to be a double-page spread that would act as one piece, but the way the picture was taken (one day I need to make a damn light-box) makes them look like separate pieces. The skull studies though (I actually was looking through Mentler's pieces and really analyzing them to the max} are more from just analyzing. 

Ashley's Storytime

Notes:  I was watching her read from life, and just decided this would be a great time to do some life painting. Of course it was done with a sketch first, then I just started laying down tones of color that reflected the surrounding garden area. The ink parts are mainly just in the border.

Charcoal Studies

Notes:  I had started these by watching old 'film-noir' esque movies on Hulu, but they (de?)volved into just really quick studies. I was just having fun. The interesting (at least I think so) part was that the charcoal was actually right out of my fire pit that was next to me while I was drawing.

Palette Cleansing

Notes:  Each piece here was a combination of reduction and testing of color. I tend to use my background color as a good piece of my finished piece, so I wanted to experiment with different color approaches. The backdrop was actually made from cleaning my palettes that I was using for my watercolors. I think would lay down the character in ink and pigment liners (the colored kind) and the extremely simplify the backgrounds so that they were just basic lines to give each of them a context.

Notes:  Cora, Cora, Cora. I wonder if maybe I draw her too much? I think she will end up being a character that I stick with for awhile. I actually want to try and start writing something about her sometime to try my hand at some writing. I've already drawn her more (need to take more images - ugh]. I need to hire someone to take these shots and then talk about them... anyone wanna be my official blog-updater? :P

Notes:  Each image here was done literally in like five-minutes. I wasn't allowed to look down at my paper and so the proportion was completely out of whack, but it was another interesting experiment.

Ink Reductions

Notes:  These are on the opposite end of that spectrum. Complete reductions (to the point where a ton of detail gets lost) were the name of the game here.  As you can see in the portraits of 'Comic-Book Life' the lack of detail can make for an interesting silhouette. I think that this might be the most important part of comic-books, is to be able to get a readable character or whatever simply off of a single flat tone.

Notes:  Yet again, the anatomy study continues. Two different approaches to doing skeletons. If you ever use tombow markers, as they go out I strongly suggest you keep them (or give them to me), because you can mix water over them with a brush and get those really nice washes that the left piece has.

Notes:  I have a tendency to look up quotes for my fiancee and then write them down places... well this one I thought was exceptionally inspirational for her, so I tried to make an illustration for it for her.

Notes:  I had a board laying around that Ashley painted the backdrop to and I just painted right on top of it and then used markers and pigment liners right on top of. This was fun!


Blue and Green Having a Battle

Notes:  I was just staring up at the sky and for some reason the combination of the new spring leaves (the green) and the bright blue of the sky were vibrating. Couple that with the strong black lines of the tree itself and it just seemed too good an opportunity to pass up. This was fun because it was actually the first canvas I'd painted on.
