Digital Painting: Life Drawing

Title: Digital Painting: Life Drawing
Date: September 19, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CC
Scale: Each 'piece' varies.

Notes: Life drawing is not something I've done in quite some time, so this was really interesting to do. I can imagine without a laptop that doing this would be kind of ludicrously hard, but somehow the other people in my class managed to pull through. I notice that my colors are a bit strange and washed out. That probably had something to do with turning my laptop's brightness up, so if I try to do this again, I'll have to figure out how to adjust the brightness, contrast, and colors for the screen better so that I can get some more life-life colors in there.
It started with some quick one-minute poses and jumped all the way up to the last one being a forty-five minute sitting. Life drawing digitally is a whole different beast when compared to photo studies.
Regardless, it was pretty fun to experiment with and I would love to do more of it.

6-2-2014

Title: 6-2-2014
Date: June 2, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6
Scale: Original is 1366px x 2048px

Notes: Yesterday was the day of studies again. Starting with this guy... a head portrait. Sorry that I don't have a link to the reference, but it was from a guy that I found on tumblr. Tried lots of new things to really see how far I could push this guy, and I have to say, having a new monitor really helps a bunch for color accuracy.

Notes: Starting to gather more anatomy studies for the month. I'm trying to do something similar to what I was doing last month. I'll keep collecting them together

Friday: Still Life with Materials

Title: Friday: Still-Life with Materials
Date: May 9, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS3
Scale: Original is 1648px x 2412px

Notes: On Friday I want to make a still-life and fill it with different materials. Of course painting from life is always the best way to go. I just kind of tossed a cloth down and put my razor down because it had metal and plastic and lights. And was all searching around the room for something else interesting. Ashley just looks over grabs a potted plant and just slams it down and then smiles back at me. I was all like... PERFECT! And here's the results...

30-Minutes of Poses

Title: 30-Minutes of Poses
Date: May 8, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS3

Notes: I'm going to be using these as warm-ups all summer long. Thirty minutes of what I would consider, pre-workouts. Every time I'm thinking of doing any art, this is what I will start with.

Thursday: Drapery Study

Title: Thursday: Drapery Study
Date: May 8, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS3
Scale: Original is 1600px x 964px

Notes: Initially this was going to be a full render of a character. But I only wanted to actually be a drapery study. So I thought about what Ashley tells me:
She says, "If you want to do a study, you should really just focus on the area that you want to study. Crop the damn picture and stop wasting your time on all the extrenous stuff. Just paint what is neccessary for the study only."
Wise words... and hilariously enough, ones that I'd never considered.

Thursday: Anatomy - Hands

Notes: Also everyday I will be playing with a different part of the anatomy. Thursday's was hands.

Lap Painting

Scale: Same as Above.

Notes: Looking down, I noticed that my mouse in the distance and was being all reflective and whatnot, so to paint? I THINK SO!

Master Swordsman - Thus Far

Independent Study: The Displaced 2

Title: Independent Study: The Displaced 2
Date: November 4 - 8, 2013
Medium: Pencil, Photoshop CS3
Scale: Varies

Notes: More of The Displaced. This is mostly just some pose / outfit studies, and trying to really get a feel for what their hands and bodies look like. They are essentially dirty homeless people that live in the abandoned tunnels of the London Underground. I'm trying to find an interesting way to blend rats and humans essentially.
Oh, there are also some Marionette redesigns on the bottom right... as well as page layout for the booklet. More soon!

So, I found another site very similar to posemanics, only a bit more refined. Quickposes. It has these really cool challenge modes. Try it out!
Also, because I'm a little slow on the pickup, Marc Brunet has this awesome tutorial on how to make custom brushes. Because of this, I've pretty much changed (again) my method for painting digitally. I made a slew of custom brushes that react very similarly to real art tools. Plus some neat brushes that I've been wanting for awhile that don't exist (at least that I've found).

Anyway, on to the art...

Anatomy Color Studies

Title: Anatomy Color Studies
Date: November 4 & 8, 2013
Medium: Photoshop CS3
Scale: Varies

Notes: Because of those custom brushes that I was going on about, I was able to streamline even further the anatomy study. It's a much more chunky paint style that I rather enjoy. Of course, I need to refine it further (these were all timed at about tenish minutes). I'll probably continue doing a jabeebus load more of these as always.
