Fan Art Friday: Sons of Anarchy

Title: Fan Art Friday: Sons of Anarchy
Date: November 14, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6
Scale: Original is 3840px x 1716px

Notes: While thinking about painting, somehow this tradition was born. Ashley was just talking about a bunch of different things, and she was like... you know what would be awesome? Fan. Art. Friday. I was like... THAT'S GREAT! And thus, a thing was born. Now I just need to keep it up.
I thought it would be fun to put an impressionist spin on a digital painting.
So I present to you, the first in a long string of paintings: Sons of Anarchy.

Digital Painting: Painterly Objects

Title: Digital Painting: Painterly Objects
Date: August 22, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CC
Scale: Original is ~8.5" x 11"

Notes: For the first assignment in Digital Painting class we were to paint a transition from one color to another and also paint a sphere and a cube from imagination. Looking back at the cube I notice that it is kind of off kilter, but it was literally painted in like five minutes. I just wanted to knock it out pretty fast so that I could start painting more things. I actually think that I'm going to paint a few more stacks of cubes and maybe practice more concept-art simpler objects like crates and lights to start getting some object painting out of the way. As always, trying to make a push into the concept art world.
Two Warm-Up WIPs

Title: Two Warm-Up WIPs
Date: August 23, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CC
Scale: Each piece varies.

Notes: I was just getting in some quick studies practice. There are lots and lots more of these in the pipe, plus I actually kind of want to push them further, but we'll see what happens. Regardless, more to come!

June - Anatomy Summary

Title: June - Anatomy Summary
Date: June
Medium: Photoshop CS6
Scale: Varies

Notes: Overall, the month of June was, what I felt like, a bit of an unproductive month. I think maybe I was feeling down or perhaps all the pending housework was destroying my productivity, but I can say that I'm trying to make a point of the things that I need to work on. Edges and Stoke economy. These are the main things that I want to really make sure that I start to watch. I think I'm getting kind of there as far as getting really expressive with my painting technique, but I think it's still falling apart on those two aspects mentioned. It's a long and frustrating process, but hopefully in the end it will be worth it.
As always... time to just keep on powering more down!

Game of Thrones - Season 1, Episode 1
(Stark's Dilemma)
(Work in Progress)

Title: Game of Thrones - Season 1, Episode 1 (Stark's Dilemma) (Work in Progress)
Date: June 17 - 24, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6
Scale: Original is 12.8" x 7.8"

Notes: I really want to do a study for every episode, so I've been taking screen caps of what I would consider to be a 'pinnacle' moment of each episode. I'm really behind as far as the work goes, but I love this show so damn much that I just want to keep pushing on my studies for these. They are some great examples of dynamic lighting, crazy scenes, and even awesome character design. Either way... more to come on these.

Demon Lord - Applied Study (WIP)

Title: Demon Lord - Applied Study (WIP)
Date: June 24 - 29, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6

Notes: Still plugging away at this WIP. That staff is looking stupid and so is the altar... much work to go!

Leather-Clad

Title: Leather-Clad
Date: June 7 - 10, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6
Scale: Original is around 24" x 33"

Notes: This originally just started as a painting of simply... how big can I go? I wanted to try out an extremely large painting with as much detail, plus I had it in my head to do a study with purely leather. I got a bit carried away with the rendering, but this was sooo fun to paint!

Anatomy Studies for May

Title: Anatomy Studies for May
Date: May 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS3
Scale: Each 'image' varies in size.

Notes: This is pretty much the sum-up from the month of May for my anatomy studies. I plan on doing more of these during June, so this is of course just the first month of true studies. All-in-all just a combination of all of them smashed together.
Class Variance: Druid

Title: Class Variance: Druid
Date: May 28, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6

Notes: I'm trying to start working on a 'what-if' hypothetical project. It will consist of a bunch of different character designs based on the generic character archetypes that are in MMOs. This is of course the first of many... and it is also a bit of a WIP still.

 WIPs

Title: WIPs
Date: Varies
Medium: Photoshop CS3, CS6
Scale: Each 'image' varies in scale.

Notes: I just want to get all caught up for the time that I've been away... just some half-starts and studies.

Date: May 13 - 21, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS3

Notes: Over on the Permanoobs forum they are doing character of the weeks and things, similar to old conceptart ones. Well, this week (I think the deadline already popped) was The Pest Controller. Here's my start just for fun. Still working on different things, so I think I missed the deadline, but I would still like to work on it.

Friday: Still Life with Materials

Title: Friday: Still-Life with Materials
Date: May 9, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS3
Scale: Original is 1648px x 2412px

Notes: On Friday I want to make a still-life and fill it with different materials. Of course painting from life is always the best way to go. I just kind of tossed a cloth down and put my razor down because it had metal and plastic and lights. And was all searching around the room for something else interesting. Ashley just looks over grabs a potted plant and just slams it down and then smiles back at me. I was all like... PERFECT! And here's the results...

30-Minutes of Poses

Title: 30-Minutes of Poses
Date: May 8, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS3

Notes: I'm going to be using these as warm-ups all summer long. Thirty minutes of what I would consider, pre-workouts. Every time I'm thinking of doing any art, this is what I will start with.

Thursday: Drapery Study

Title: Thursday: Drapery Study
Date: May 8, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS3
Scale: Original is 1600px x 964px

Notes: Initially this was going to be a full render of a character. But I only wanted to actually be a drapery study. So I thought about what Ashley tells me:
She says, "If you want to do a study, you should really just focus on the area that you want to study. Crop the damn picture and stop wasting your time on all the extrenous stuff. Just paint what is neccessary for the study only."
Wise words... and hilariously enough, ones that I'd never considered.

Thursday: Anatomy - Hands

Notes: Also everyday I will be playing with a different part of the anatomy. Thursday's was hands.

3D Illustration: Gears

Title: 3D Illusttration: Gears
Medium: Mixed Media

Notes: For the final 3D illustration project we were allowed to work in teams and had to create more-or-less a scene and storyboard.

I looked to my right immediately and there was instantly like a silent agreement between Colton, Rob, and I. So off we went, just throwing around suggestions and different ideas. I think somewhere in there I was like, "Let's do a self-portrait of ourselves as adventurers trying to break into a dungeon." <we all shook our head pretty quickly to that> So we kept scribbling and searching for ideas, and I just kinda toss out this idea of, "Hey... what if we were to do robots. DRUNK ROBOTS!" <again, we all shook our head and kind of had a laugh> There was a silence over us for a few minutes. I think there was a certain hive mind brewing for a minute about this. And then I think it was Rob that looked over and was just like, "Well... what if we did Wall-E as a wanted poster.", to which I responded, "Yeah, he would be wanted for Grand Theft because he's constantly putting shit in that little drawer of his!" <laughter ensues> And literally from that moment, the project's scope just grew and grew. Looking back, I wonder if this project is a testament to see just how far and ridiculous we can go with a project.

Regardless, it was incredibly fun! I also think that after the fact, Rob looked at us and was like... I think I want to make an entire city of this stuff! Potential for future team-projects? We shall see...

So here's the breakdown of who did what:

Mat Kaminski - passed out drunkard robot,  bar stools, and all the advertisements and posters on the wall.
Colton Beretta - the bartender and all the accessories to the bar - cups, bottles, mugs.
Rob McElhaney - "wrestler bot", and the bar itself, and gears logo.

Type O Negative - "World Coming Down"

'Quick' Studies

Title: 'Quick' Studies
Date: March 24 - 31, 2014
Medium: Graphite, Photoshop CS3
Scale: Varies

Notes: A compilation of things that I've been up to for a little bit. Mainly just trying to make sure that I don't get rusty in any specific area. So this is just a few tests of different things over the past few days. I want to crank out a ton more stuff, but there are big projects in the works.

'Zoodles

Title: 'Zoodles
Medium: Graphite, Brush and Ink
Scale: Each 'page' is 9" x 12"

Notes: Every week on Wednesday, during lunch the illustration department at MCA goes over to the zoo and just sketches away. I think every time I go I get a little faster, a little more experimental, a little more... something. If nothing else, it's just great to get out of the school and away from everything and just sketch my ass off.
It's a bit more therapeutic than anything and if nothing else... it gets exposure to my art to all the passer-byers. Either way, it's a fun thing to do and I highly recommend it!

Depeche Mode - Dream On

Black Magic Woman

Title: Black Magic Woman
Date: February 14, 2013
Medium: Photoshop CS3
Scale: Original image is 1224px x 1632px

Notes: Continuing on attempting that oil painting style with my digitals.
I tried some new stuff in terms of using different brushes in different areas to see how that would change things. I don't know why I love portraits so much. I should break away from them for a bit maybe and do some animals or something... Unfortunately for the oil paintings that I'm working on, since I'm not comfortable with the materials, I'm working with comfortable subject matter.

Anyway... more soon!

Mysterious Woman

Title: Mysterious Woman
Date: February 10, 2013
Medium: Photoshop CS3
Scale: Original image is 1428px x 1800px

Notes: I've been watching more oil painting demos and then attempting to apply them to my photo studies that I do digitally. This is my newest attempt. Of course I think it helps a ton to get read to while working.

On a side note, I've finally braved it. I have more work to do on it, but I've started to officially oil paint!

I'll post that later when I'm satisfied with it...

Here's the tutorial for this one. As always, leave a comment if you need any clarification or if you want a better tutorial.

Friday, January 24, 2014

So, at school I’ve been getting asked how I’ve been able to get where I am now… I think the following can literally sum up everything pretty much.

Here’s literally the way I got to where I am now:

http://youtu.be/g4qZCTrBoIo start here so that you know what a gesture is (if you didn’t already)

http://www.posemaniacs.com/ apply the gesture idea here. I would suggest to start with the longest time you can (2-minutes I think?) and try and capture the essence of the figure as fast as possible.

From there I would try out the challenge modes here: http://quickposes.com/

Next you can do real models here: http://artists.pixelovely.com/

And finally, when you get comfortable being able to slap out gesture and even longer pose studies, I would suggest you do full-renders from here:

http://characterdesigns.com/
http://hel-looks.com/
http://www.scott-eaton.com/category/bodies-in-motion

Of course, these are just for character design by the way.

Here’s everything else I got for you guys:

https://www.youtube.com/user/ProkoTV
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NygkJEc3yu4
http://muddycolors.blogspot.com/
http://bluefley.blogspot.com/

Other than that do Master Studies. Look to old masters like these:

http://greatilluminators.blogspot.com/

and try your damndest to copy them.

OH and I almost forgot… the brushes.

http://matkaminski.blogspot.com/2013/10/typical-brushes-that-i-use.html

also… http://bluefley.blogspot.com/2013/11/how-to-create-my-square-brush.html
Hopefully this will help someone… Happy painting. If you have any questions or whichever, you can always ask. I’ll try to respond as timely as possible :)

OH! Lastly… I followed this for awhile. It’s a bit intense, but it has a supply list and all that if you want to follow it exactly but that’s up to you.

http://matkaminski.blogspot.com/2012/05/my-summer-schedule.html

It is a little intense though…

But yeah... I can't update without art... so here you go!

Green-Haired Madam

Title: Green-Haired Madam
Date: January 23 & 24, 2013
Medium: Photoshop CS3
Scale: Original is 2048px x 1326px

Notes: So this was an experiment really in field of vision painting. I was trying to see if I could make focal areas based on the rendered / looseness of the area of the painting. I think it came out okay, but I really need to play with that smudge tool a bunch more. It doesn't look as purposeful as I would have liked. Either way, I think the girl rendered out decently though.

As usual with my painting, I try to keep with as big of a brush for as long as I can, so initially this was painted at 25% zoom, and then as I painted I would get closer and closer rendering the focal points as much as possible. For example, her face and hands were painted at 100%.

And yet again, a tutorial gif... I hope this helps someone. Any questions or if you need anything clarified, toss up a comment.
