Staring Through

Title: Staring Through
Date: January 29 - February 5, 2015
Medium: Photoshop CS6
Scale: Original is approx. 17" x 23"

Notes: Firstly, thanks to FaeStock on deviantart.
Secondly... I think I got a bit carried away with this photo study. It was originally supposed to just be about that crazy color of hair, but I think somewhere along the way I just had to push through. It was fun and a good testament to how far I've come since I first started digital painting.

Battling the Consciences

Title: Battling the Consciences
Date: January 18 & 19, 2015
Medium: Photoshop CS6
Scale: Original is 5.3" x 8"

Notes: Forcing a palette on a study is an interesting way to go about making something 'yours'. I tried to make sure that the colors were very specific so that it fit within certain constraints.
Hope you enjoy!

Photek - "Levitation"

Just a Bunch of WIPs

Title: Just a Bunch of WIPs
Medium: Photoshop CS6, Pencil
Scale: Varies

Notes: Ultimately, I'm just full of experiments at the moment, but the last one (Samus) is actually part of a contest that I'm going to be entering soon. It's basically just drawing a video game character on top of a pose that was provided. I thought it would be fun to paint some Zero-Suit Samus - although... I think I'm bordering on a pin-up version of her.Other than that just sketching around trying to get some ideas flowing.
More soon...

June - Anatomy Summary

Title: June - Anatomy Summary
Date: June
Medium: Photoshop CS6
Scale: Varies

Notes: Overall, the month of June was, what I felt like, a bit of an unproductive month. I think maybe I was feeling down or perhaps all the pending housework was destroying my productivity, but I can say that I'm trying to make a point of the things that I need to work on. Edges and Stoke economy. These are the main things that I want to really make sure that I start to watch. I think I'm getting kind of there as far as getting really expressive with my painting technique, but I think it's still falling apart on those two aspects mentioned. It's a long and frustrating process, but hopefully in the end it will be worth it.
As always... time to just keep on powering more down!

Game of Thrones - Season 1, Episode 1
(Stark's Dilemma)
(Work in Progress)

Title: Game of Thrones - Season 1, Episode 1 (Stark's Dilemma) (Work in Progress)
Date: June 17 - 24, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6
Scale: Original is 12.8" x 7.8"

Notes: I really want to do a study for every episode, so I've been taking screen caps of what I would consider to be a 'pinnacle' moment of each episode. I'm really behind as far as the work goes, but I love this show so damn much that I just want to keep pushing on my studies for these. They are some great examples of dynamic lighting, crazy scenes, and even awesome character design. Either way... more to come on these.

Demon Lord - Applied Study (WIP)

Title: Demon Lord - Applied Study (WIP)
Date: June 24 - 29, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6

Notes: Still plugging away at this WIP. That staff is looking stupid and so is the altar... much work to go!

Ram Horns - A Study

Title: Ram Horns - A Study
Date: June 24, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6

Notes: I worked a little backward this time, but this was a study for the bigger illustration below. Let's face it... horns of any variety are kind of a pain because of all the folds and ridges that are there. BUT they look awesome!
I was trucking along with my demon lord painting and lo and behold, I realized in mid-paint that... I have no idea really how ram horns work - SO! I thought, what better time than to study some horns from a photo. I took the study of the horns and began to apply it to the demon lord painting that I'm working on. I'm still in like mid-paint for the demon lord, but this is it so far:

Demon Lord - Applied Study (WIP)

Title: Demon Lord - Applied Study (WIP)
Date: June 24 & 25, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS6

Notes: This piece is really just a test to see how well I can use both applied studies, imagination and to really push that dramatic lighting. It still has quite a bit to go, but I thought I would share where I'm at currently. Finally breaking away from those damn studies to actually paint something that I enjoy.

Applied Studies - The Pest Controller

Title: Applied Studies - The Pest Controller
Date: May 13 & 14, 2014
Medium: Photoshop CS3

Notes: Over on the Permanoobs forum they are doing character of the weeks and things, similar to old conceptart ones. Well, this week (I think the deadline already popped) was The Pest Controller. Here's my start just for fun.

Title: Wednesday - Still Life with Metal and Leather
Date: May 14, 2014

Notes: I wanted to try and combine a few materials into one still-life.

Applied Studies

Title: Applied Studies
Date: January 19 & 20, 2013
Medium: Photoshop CS3

Notes: So... I was attempting something new: a master painting, and then immediately afterwards I would jump in and try to paint one using the techniques I just learned.
The portrait on the left is a Sorolla.
Using the strokes and brush work from the left, I tried jumping in and painting a portrait that was in a similar vein using the same brushes and strokes that I just used. This of course proved harder than expected. I think I will try more of this soon (as you can see from the half-started piece on the bottom left).

Environment Speeds

Title: Environment Speeds
Date: January 20, 2013
Medium: Photoshop CS3

Notes: Studying environments to +1 on them. Actually got this idea entirely from Lee Parks here. His are quite a bit better, but then I can honestly say that he studies environments far more than I do. Something that I should try and play catch-up on sometime soon.
It might not only help my characters from just floating in a space, but will most likely help my colors get closer to a more realistic palette instead of being quite off.

Here's Pinky, where's the Brain?

Title: Here's Pinky, where's the Brain?
Date: January 19, 2013
Medium: Photoshop CS3
Scale: Original is 1200px x 2000px

Notes: Yet again, more of those photostudies while listening to my madam read books. She's already on the third book of The Strain, and I highly recommend that people read it. It's AWESOME! :)

Edit: BONUS TUTORIAL!

  • Step 1: Render Background some, this will help you to define your 'character space'.
  • Step 2: Sketch out the character in it's entirety (or at least what you plan to paint in later.
  • Step 3: Wash layer. Basically throw a quick wash over what your want the basic backdrop colors to be.
  • Step 4 & 5: Render, render, and more rendering.
  • Step 6: Because I was a little unsure of all the crazy jewelry and add-on stuff this girl had, I made a new layer and just popped it up there.

As always, any questions, ask 'em in the comments!

Anatomy (from Imagination)

Title: Anatomy (from Imagination)
Medium: Pencil

Notes: So, from the last time you saw some pencils, I have tried that mouth technique using no reference at all and have discovered that I can draw a mouth in pretty much any way using that technique. So I tried continuing on with the full head and even some body, and discovered that I need to go back to the drawing board even more before I can just spit these things out from imagination. More studies of shape design for sure.
